Imagine
Wayne Kelly

Imagine a time when gang members valued their lives
more than they valued a gun.
Imagine a time when a father claimed his out-of-wedlock
first son.

Imagine a time when homicides didn’t happen every
day.
Imagine a time when rapping or athletics wasn’t the only
way.

Imagine a time when a student’s success wasn’t determined
by a letter grade.
Imagine a time when our spirits correlated with how much
we got paid.

Imagine a time when black kids grew up knowing their skin
tone is beautiful and swell.
Imagine a time when that little black boy didn’t believe he
was destined for jail.

All this imagination won’t come true if we just stand
still.
I’ve heard a picture is worth a thousand words, this canvas
in my mind painting what could be real.

Forever moving forward, in the darkness us rising
above.
Looking to each other for inspiration, with unconditional
Love.
