No Man’s Land
Leah Heddinger

Dirt trenches,
barbed wire.

Dysentery,
cholera,
typhus,
trench foot.

Smell of blood,
festering wounds.

Machine guns firing.

Shells exploding.

Brown uniforms,
steel helmets.

Zeppelins in air.

Scent of mustard gas.

Tanks rumbling.

Dead bodies in trenches.

More shells raining down.
A roar.

Everything
quiet.
