Prayer for an Angry Man
Tim Wedge

Oh, God, thank you for my anger.
There is no good I have ever done but that which was
born in anger and nurtured in compassion.

Anger is not rage.
It is not hate.
It is not fear.

Give my anger vision; let it always know right from wrong.
Let it never fall upon the undeserving or the helpless.
Make my anger servant to my conscience, and never its
master. Let it be slow that it never, in its haste, stray
from its path.

Anger is not rage.
It is not hate.
It is not fear.

Let my anger be selfless; let it burn on wrong done to
others, and not my own pettiness. Let it be love’s
companion and caring’s champion. Let it be shield,
not sword.

Anger is not rage.
It is not hate.
It is not fear.

Let my anger not easily subside. Make it resolute. Let it
burn strongly, not quickly, that it may stand on a
mountain of embers and stand against the wind and rain
of temporary defeat.

Anger is not rage.
It is not hate.
It is not fear.

Keep my anger far from its dark cousins. Let it ease
suffering, and never create more. Let compassion be
its constant companion and advisor; let it always find
the kindest path.

Anger is not rage.
It is not hate.
It is not fear.

Anger is life.
